Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the physician should be able to:

  • Discuss the role of specific imaging tools to plan, guide, and assess embolotherapy.
  • Understand the macro- and microcirculatory environment in order to maximize chemo- and radioembolization of liver tumors.
  • Describe the evidence for and results of embolization for treatment of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, trauma, hemoptysis, and hepatic and extrahepatic malignancies.
  • Use bland, chemo, and radio-embolization for treatment of hepatic malignancies.
  • Summarize the most current clinical trials in endovascular and ablative loco-regional therapies of solid organ and bone malignancies.
  • Explain patient selection for embolotherapy of peripheral arterial, trauma, gastrointestinal, venous, and gynecological disease states.
  • Manage rapid imaging and clinical workup of multi-trauma patients and implement rapid embolization therapies.
  • Describe the anatomy relevant to prostate embolization, patient selection, and technical considerations.
  • Understand the classifications of basic and complex peripheral vascular malformations and define therapies or indications for referral.
  • Describe the indications and embolization approaches to the treatment of visceral aneurysms.
  • Manage endoleaks after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR).
  • Use embolization for treatment of miscellaneous non-malignant conditions including hypersplenism, adenomyosis, and epistaxis.
  • Incorporate technical knowledge of the most current devices and techniques for transient or permanent vessel occlusion.

GEST U.S. will be of value to interventional radiologists, oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, nurses, radiology technologists, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals interested in the field of embolization.
